Interview Adrián Santana

“My beginnings were with my uncle Pepito Vargas, who was my teacher and who taught me everything about flamenco, all the palos and to dance by right. From the age of nine, I combined with my studies at the Conservatorio Superior de Danza in Malaga, where I studied all the disciplines: classical, classical Spanish, flamenco, folklore, etc.

»As for the artistic trajectory, note that I have been soloist of the company of Aida Gómez and that I have danced with her in festivals as important as Jerez or in the Acropolis of Greece. I have also performed with Rocío Molina in different festivals, highlighting the City Center of New York within the program of Flamenco Festival. In solo projects, as a professional, I took the second prize at the Madrid Certamen Coreográfico in 2010 with the piece “Siempre me pasa lo mismo” and with that same piece I did my first show that premiered in the “La otra mirada del flamenco” in Sala Pradillo and took it abroad. It was my first and most special set up. I had the opportunity to choreograph a show along with two Asian girls, entitled La partida which premiered in Hong Kong and was performed in Japan.

»With my own company, the last show Simbiosis, premiered in Granada in the Veranos del Corral, was performed at the Málaga Festival and with it I travel to the Festival of Alburquerque for its 30th anniversary. In February of this year I made a residence in Albuquerque and I have created a piece for the company Hijastros.

Within my training, el tablao is a super important part and it is very necessary for any artist who engages in flamenco, it is a school that must be passed and where the artist really does as a professional and where he or she forms as an artist. It is a school where you enjoy a lot and for me it is necessary not to stop being there and maybe it is one of the places where I enjoy the most and where I learn most from the colleagues with whom I share».

Cristina Aguilera interview

«Dancing in a tablao means spontaneity, a game between the musicians, depending on their energy, in the end the dance will go one way or the other. And that’s the interesting thing and the beauty of the tablaos: improvisation, speed, is a beautiful sensation, to tell you the truth. There is a lot of difference between dancing in a tablao and other spaces because the tablao is a rather small space and the movement has to be according to that. For example, I am quite tall and I have to cut back the movements, I have to adapt to that space that is much smaller. Apart from that when you dance in a theater you take everything half staged, the dance more agreed with the musicians, but in the tablao even on the same day you do not know who is going to play or who is going to sing to you, so it changes a lot. As an anecdote I would say that in my family there has never been anyone who has dedicated to flamenco and in fact I have a taste for flamenco because I was almost hyperactive as a child, my mother could not stand me at home and looked for an activity that was somewhat moved for the body and thought that if I went to dance I would get home more tired. And that’s the way it was, that’s why I dance, since that day I’ve been hooked and I’ve never disengaged».

“Las Carboneras is a magical place”

«I am a bailaor who comes from the classical training, I studied at the Conservatory of Córdoba and I graduated in the medium degree of Spanish dance. At the same time I did six classical courses with Araleo Moyano. Then Javier Latorre opened his studio next to my grandmother’s house and he was the one who gave me the option to start my career with good steps in classical training. I am not self-taught in any aspect, I come from working hours.

»As for my career, I was fortunate to participate in several important shows by Javier Latorre such as “Rinconete y ‘Cortadillo” or “En el nombre de la rosa”or with Antonio Canales in “Torero”. They were very important moments in my career that marked me a lot and I learned a lot, not only from the dance but from everything that surrounds the scene and so on. I would highlight Javier Latorre or Antonio Canales as maestros with whom I trained. And on a musical level, once I started a solo career, there are three people that marked me a lot. Obviously, Vicente Amigo, with whom I spent eight years touring the world and making me enjoy the most wonderful music I’ve ever heard. Another person is Chano Domínguez, who opened the field of jazz and made me see that music is very rich and that fusion, working with other music, would enrich me very much. And so it was because he put me with artists like Wynton Marsalis, Paquito D’Rivera, Piraña… I do not know, he put me with very good artists in theaters and important festivals and with whom I keep working and going on tour in the United States. And the third person, more on foot, is Juan Requena, guitarist from Málaga who was the one who made me take care of the music and who gave me a vision of the dance that I loved. And I think that from there I put all the knowledge and all the experiences I had in one way. Juan Requena is a person who has also marked my career very much.

»I would like to add that there is a fourth person, Pedro Córdoba, whom I also had as a reference from a young age and at the foot of the field, someone who made me see the dance in a different way. So I would like his name to also appear as a fourth important person in my career.

»What does it mean for me to dance in a tablao? Well for me it was the first test of fire. To leave a conservatory and face a tablao, to the absolute truth, to the bull, was an almost definitive challenge. Or I was fine and I thought I could and had possibilities or directly I would not have followed the path. But I was very lucky, I was in Los Gallos, in Seville, a place where they made me learn at lightning speed with great artists on the side. And nowadays it has become a necessity because we all have our agendas, exits and commitments and those performances are gratifying in serious places, but then in the day to day there is a need to be able to unburden you, at least in my case, all the sensations both good and bad and put into practice something that you can then take to a theater if you have seen that it has worked before in a tablao. And the truth is that the tablao, which is to gather a group of people, that each one comes with its history and in that moment be able to, with the soul, create a climate and make enjoy people that has paid a ticket. And to people that, like us, that we are going to enjoy, but we do not always go on stage with the one hundred percent willingness to believe that everything will turn out well and many times it goes to two hundred percent. And, if I have to highlight something, Las Carboneras is a magical place where that happens often and that’s why I like to be there with you from time to time».

«Every artist has to pass through the tablao, Camarón has passed and the biggest ones too»

«I’m from Jerez, I’ve been in Madrid for 31 years, I came here as a kid. I started playing the guitar. My training as a little kid was thanks to my family, who are Fernando Terremoto, Vicente Soto, Manuel Sordera, José Soto, José Mercé, that’s what I’ve swallowed. As a singer I have always liked Manuel Torre, Caracol, as well as the great artists of my family. When I started as a guitarist, I came to accompany El Grilo, my dad told me that in order to play the guitar well I had to study a lot and that I better would become cantaor, that as a guitarist I was not going to get there. I was very lazy and I preferred to find out what cantes and those things are. And, of course, I listened to him and started singing and there I had my first training. But my genes come from the Sordera, the Soto, Fernando Terremoto, that’s where everything I learned comes from.

»When I arrived in Madrid, I was with El Güito or Cristóbal Reyes. I went to Zambra, the tablao where I met Joaquín Cortés and I went on tour with him, and also with Antonio Canales or Manuela Carrasco, who is my cousin. I spent many years with Canales and Joaquín, with whom I was working with Jennifer López in New York. The last thing I have done is with the company of Antonio Gades, which helped me a lot to know what the staging is, the lights, know how to place myself under the zenith, those things. With Gades I exploited my facet as an actor, knowing how to develop on a stage, know how to act, which is something that I have much in mind since then. I have learned from the greatest, you could say. I met Carlos Saura also, who is a film director, and I have learned a lot from that.

»Among the first tablaos I was in, one of the most important for me was Las Carboneras, and there I learned a lot. Every artist has to pass through the tablao, Camarón and the bigger ones have passed. The tablao, which is where I am now, is one of the things that most satisfy me, because it is something that is for you, inside, that you stay with that, and it is one of the things that are filling me

more at this time of my life.

»For me tablao is the essence, everyone has to go through a tablao to know what it is. For me, it is where you enjoy the most, where you become the most, where you can best resolve, singing to the dancers. It is sung without rehearsing, everything comes out of inspiration, instinct and in a natural way. Now, it’s what I like the most, where I’m learning the most. Everyone has to go through there, in a tablao.»
